Explore Oxford - Snake’s Head Fritillaries at Iffley Meadows
Oxford is a city that boasts a number of green open spaces. Located just 1.5 miles from the centre of Oxford, Iffley Meadows Nature Reserve, which is managed by Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), offers a truly stunning spring spectacle. During the month of April Oxfordshire’s iconic flower, the snake’s head fritillary comes into bloom. BBOWT took over the management of the site in 1983 and since then have carefully managed the meadows, seeing numbers of the flower increasing from a mere 500 to over 89,000 and making Iffley Meadows one of the best places in the country to see these rare native flowers.
According to the trust the peak of the display is expected to be in the next two weeks. So why not get out into nature and go on a walk with family or friends over Easter weekend? The reserve is best accessed by foot or cycle from the Thames path or from Weirs Lane. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead. More useful information on what to know before you go can be found here on BBOWT’s website.
If you’ve built up a good appetite whilst wandering amongst the wildlife then you could visit The Isis Farmhouse, a characterful riverside pub. There’s a good range of drinks, the food is imaginative and the garden is fenced so your children don’t fall in the river. Find their menu here.
